The Big Update, Part 1
Posted by Fritz on December 4th, 2007
Holy cow, what a two months it has been! Since I last sat down to write, we've been to three different countries. And Texas. And New York. Yikes! Let me bring you up to speed in stages. It all started back in the middle of October with...
Maker Faire
Maker Faire in Austin, Texas was simply astounding. Put together by the folks at Make Magazine, this event is quite simply going to change the world. Okay, so seeing a life-size Mousetrap game is awesome, but there's an underlying idea behind it all: explore the world around you and see what amazing and unexpected things you can do. Makers want to break stuff to find out how it works, to find out what else they can get it to do, to innovate! These are our kind of people!
So really, Maker Faire is a place to see hackers of all kinds: people who weld bicycles together to make human-powered amusement park rides; people who make tiny magnetically-controlled magnetic fish; people who make the craziest miniature golf course ever (including a shrinking ray). It ranges from high-tech to low-tech, from huge machines to homemade gadgets.
One of my favorites was a homemade echo box: open a small wooden box (with some concealed circuitry inside), say something, and close the lid. When you next open the box, it echoes back what you said before. Beautifully simple.
The huge thing that blew my mind was a huge rolling ferris wheel, where three people pedal themselves around. It's hard to explain, so check out Rocketboom's video of Maker Faire - you'll see the rolling ferris wheel and a whole lot more.
Our performances featured what just might be the biggest crowds we've ever had and featured the unexpected bonus of a bunch of little kids running right into the middle of the show to get themselves soaking wet! If you watch carefully, you can see the kids on the Rocketboom video. It was great!
So if you have the chance, visit the next Maker Faire in San Mateo on May 3 & 4, 2008. It's amazing, and I sure hope we'll be there too!
Next stop: London, England. Coming soon...

Maker Faire and Popsicle Bridges!
Posted by Fritz on October 17, 2007
This month, we're performing at Maker Faire in Austin, Texas - one of the coolest events on the planet! You'll be able to see all kinds of amazing stuff, like a life-sized Mousetrap game. It's brought to you by the folks at Make Magazine, who also made this week's EepyPick: Popsicle Stick Bridges. It's a great experiment: they get a thousand popsicle sticks and build as strong a bridge as they can. Take a look at their great and, um, not so great results!

New Audiobody CD!
Posted by Fritz on October 17, 2007
Yep, Audiobody's got a fantastic new CD out, and you can get your very own copy from our spiffy new online store: the EepyStore. All the great music on our Diet Coke & Mentos videos is by Audiobody, and this new CD has 15 tracks of pure goodness.
In case you're wondering, one of the super secret videos that we're working on will use track #13 - Loophole. Check it out!

T-shirts for Everyone!
Posted by Fritz on October 17, 2007
You've all been asking (well, about half of you have been asking) for EepyBird t-shirts for women. They have arrived, and now all the guys are jealous, 'cause they look really cool. They're a beautiful light blue, and no gal who's a fan of Diet Coke & Mentos should be without one. Take a look...

Poetry in Motion
Posted by Fritz on October 17, 2007
Earlier this year, we hosted a video contest at Coke.com called Poetry in Motion. We put together this montage of some of the most amazing entries, including footage of the winner, Charlie Brust, and his visit to EepyBird headquarters! Check out the video!

EepyPick: Backwards Piano by Panda Smash
Posted by Fritz on October 17, 2007
Every week, we're choosing a new video that we think is really cool and putting it on our EepyPicks page so that you can check it out. This week's pick is Panda Smash's Backwards Piano. It blew our minds - it's a simple idea that they took several steps further than we expected. Watch the awesome video...

New World Record Video!
Posted by Fritz on October 17, 2007
We've got a quick video of the new, official Guinness World Record for Diet Coke & Mentos! Holland, the home of Mentos, where a huge group of volunteers helped us set off 851 geysers. It's an unbelievable sight! Check out the insane video!

Day 4: Holland
Posted by Fritz on September 17, 2007
Okay - how ridiculously beautiful can one country be? We've grabbed an extra day and a half here in Amsterdam before heading home, and I could so live here! We spent hours just walking around, looking at all the old houses, the churches, and the beautiful canals. We learned very quickly that there are parts of the road for cars and parts of the road for bicycles. Don't get in the way of the bicycles! There are a lot of them!
We spent a couple of hours at the Van Gogh Museum, where they've got an unbelievable collection, including 200 paintings by Van Gogh himself. Two of my favorites: Blossoming Almond Tree and Plaster Statuette of a Horse. In contrast to some of his big classics, they're both rather simple, which I like. It was great to see so many things by the same artist and get a sense of how he constantly explored new ideas. In one of his letters, Van Gogh said, "I am always doing what I can't do yet in order to learn how to do it." Nice idea.
After seeing some beautiful Rembrandts & Vermeers at the Rijksmuseum (especially The Milkmaid), I even had time for a quick stop at the zoo, which was just around the corner from our hotel. They had an ijsbeer (pronounced "ice beer"). Click here to see a picture. All the kids at the zoo were particularly excited to see the wasbeer (pronounced "vas beer"). Perhaps not quite so exciting for us. Here's a picture. They had seven of them!
So now we head back for the U.S. I wonder how many movies I'll be able to watch during our eight hours on the plane home. It was a great trip, and I hope we'll be back again soon! Thanks again to Jacco and all the folks at Perfetti van Melle / Mentos!

Day 3: Holland
Posted by Fritz on September 15, 2007
We did it! After our record of 504 geysers in Cincinnati got beaten by
the folks in Texas, we've won it back! The new record: 851 geysers of
Mentos-powered soda, all at the same time. It was quite a sight! We
spent the morning setting up for our performance: a 105-bottle
variation on Experiment #137. With DJ Dazzle playing great music and
MC Sherlock getting the crowd whipped into a frenzy, the Kasteelplein
(that's Castle Square) was hopping! After our performance, we led the
countdown, and all 851 of us (including me & Stephen) set off 851 Diet
Coke & Mentos geysers. Actually, over here, it's "Coke Light" & Mentos
geysers. Either way, 851 is a lot of geysers, and it looked so
amazing. And it made a really, really, really big mess! That's where
the cleaning crew was amazing: two hours later, you'd never guess that
there'd been that much soda spraying all over the square.
So that's it - a whole lot of fun, and a whole lot of geysers. Right
here at the home of Mentos. It doesn't get better than that!
Although... we hear rumors that someone is going to try to break this
record soon. I guess that means we'll have to come back here to
Holland soon and do even more! Bring it on - that could be even more
spectacular!
One side note: everyone calls us "The EepyBirds" over here, which is
really fun. Our stage was called the "Podium EepyBirds." In the
restaurant afterwards, we caught sight of a woman clearly explaining
to her friend the whole Diet Coke & Mentos geyser thing, complete with
big hand gestures of gushing soda, and in amongst the Dutch
explanation, we heard, "de EepyBirds." Too cool!
Tomorrow, we make our way to Amsterdam, and take a little bit of time
to see the sights before heading back home. We should be just getting
adjusted to the time change, and then it'll be time to go home. =sigh=
Huge, enormous, tremendous thanks to Jacco, Annerieke, Eva, and the
whole gang at Perfetti van Melle / Mentos for a fantastic time in
Holland! It was a spectacular success!

Day 2: Holland
Posted by Fritz on September 14, 2007
Just when we thought Holland couldn't get any cooler, we had another
great day. After sleeping A LOT, we went to the Mentos factory in the
morning. Every year, this place makes a billion rolls of Mentos -
that's billion with a B. That's a lot of Mentos. We could make quite a
geyser with that many! Inside the factory, we got chased by the
robotic forklifts, saw the silos that store the 600 tons of sugar they
use every week, and went to the huge warehouse where 6,500 huge crates
of candy wait to be shipped around the world - including all the
Mentos that we eat (and play with) in the U.S.
We had a nice afternoon walking around Breda. Can I just say that
Holland is stunningly beautiful? Everywhere we look, it's like a
picture postcard. All these canals, bicycles everywhere, little kids
playing soccer in the street... Just as we came out of our hotel this
morning, a woman drove by on a bicycle with a basketful of sunflowers.
It's all so ridiculously perfect!
After a spiffy radio interview with a reporter switching seamlessly
between English & Dutch (which sounds so cool, with long, round vowels
interrupted by explosions of phlegmy consonants), we just had to go
back to the same restaurant as last night for more tiramisu - the
world's perfect dessert.
And so, we are almost ready for tomorrow's world record attempt. We
just heard that we've got to get more than 791 to beat the new record
by the folks in Texas. So we're hoping to get more than 800 people to
show up tomorrow to help us set this record. Fingers crossed!

Day 1: Holland
Posted by Fritz on September 13, 2007
It's m'birthday, it's m'birthday! And here we are in Holland! Booyah!
We're a little bit jet lagged, but we had a great day. We flew into
Schipol Airport in Amsterdam bright and early: 8am. That'd be 2am back
home. What a great time to start your day! This is our fourth trip to
Europe, and every time, as soon as we land, we're headed for a
performance. This was no exception: after a quick shower, it was off
to the TV studio for an appearance on "Jansen" - one of Holland's
biggest TV shows. Jansen was super cool, and we had a great time - sat
on the big red couch, talked about our upcoming world record attempt,
and did a couple Diet Coke & Mentos stunts. Jansen himself even set
off a geyser all over his desk - it was fantastic!
We then headed for Breda, where we'll be trying to set the new world
record on Saturday. We're in Holland, all the people are riding
bicycles, I had some of the best food ever, and my room in the hotel
even has an electric fireplace with a remote control. It's my
birthday, and life is good!

EepyBird's Going to Holland!
Posted by Fritz on August 27th, 2007
Besides being hard at work on a super secret new video, we'll be traveling a lot this fall. Good thing we got our passports up to date, 'cause we're heading for Holland on September 12. I'll actually get to celebrate my birthday while we're over there. Sometimes life is good.
We'll visit the big Mentos factory and try to set another world record. That will be in Breda on Saturday, September 15. We're taking the video camera along, so you can go behind the scenes with us and see more Diet Coke & Mentos geysers than anyone's ever done before. Along the way, I'm counting on seeing windmills and some Rembrandt paintings. And I can't wait to try all the funky flavors of Mentos that we don't have in the U.S.
After Holland, we'll be traveling for much of September and October, before the weather gets too cold for good geysers (Unless we head for Australia! Hmmm...). I'll post more details on our other performances soon.
Between shows, we're working on a very cool new video. We just spent a couple of days building several dozen prototype devices... but I mustn't say too much! It's all hush hush, top secret, and a ton of fun. We'll keep you posted!

YouTube Gathering: 07.07.07
Posted by Fritz on July 9th, 2007
We're just back from 07.07.07, the awesome gathering of YouTubers in New York City! We spent the entire day in Washington Square Park with a gazillion YouTubers (I believe the official count was 1.2 gazillion), and we came ever so close to doing a big Diet Coke & Mentos geyser display. Here's the story:
For us, the day at the park began at 9 am, since it takes us over three hours to set up for a live performance of Experiment 137. We looked around for the ideal location and found it: right between the fountain and the arch - a beautiful location & the drainage is good! Then Park Policeman #1 stopped by. He looked at the permit that Jill had so wonderfully obtained, and everything seemed okay. So we started setting up. At 11 am, Park Policeman #2 (also known as The Supervisor) stopped by. Everything seemed okay, so we loaded up all our Mentos and got all our bottles of Diet Coke ready. Then at 12:30 pm, Park Policeman #3 (also known as The Supervisor's Supervisor) stopped by. And it was clear that everything was not okay. We're still not quite sure what was wrong with the permit, but they made it clear that the show would not go on. D'oh!
So there we were, with over 200 big bottles of Diet Coke that we really didn't want to load back on the truck. So we started giving them away - to people who promised not to get us in trouble by setting off geysers in the park! Later in the day, a few rebellious folk did go and find some Mentos & Diet Coke (the people will be heard!) and set off some renegade geysers!
It was disappointing not to be able to perform for everyone, particularly 'cause we were shut down so close to show time. But everyone was super nice to us, and we had a great time! We got to meet Chad Vader, HappySlip, Nalts, and a whole lot of other great YouTubers. Most of all, it was great to see what an incredible community there is, get to talk to so many great people, and meet everyone face to face, not just watch their videos online! We shot a bunch of video while we were there, and we'll be editing it together a.s.a.p. Check back in a few days!
Our thanks to David, Mike D., Mike V., Paige, and Carrie for all their help. And a huge, huge thank you to Matt and Tim, who were all set to provide, for the first time ever, *live music* for an EepyBird performance. Yep - imagine Audiobody performing "You Gotta Tap" live with the geysers going off right then and there! Ah, it was so close!
Next time (I sure hope there is a next time!), if we talk to them far enough in advance, I wonder if they'd let us do Diet Coke & Mentos geysers inside the fountain pool? It'd make cleanup a lot easier! Hmm...

Day 4: The Emmy Awards!
Posted on June 14, 2007
Thursday: Didn't win an Emmy - but we had a fantastic time! We got to pet a penguin. Yep, a penguin. There were two of them, in fact, wandering around the Emmy Awards. Of course.
We saw Christopher Lloyd, Brian Boitano, and a gazillion soap stars. Kevin, Angela, and Oscar from The Office were there. The voice of Sponge Bob was there. Best of the night: Oscar the Grouch and Elmo gave away a bunch of awards, with their puppeteers right there behind them on stage. I would swear to you that those puppets were alive. And then Caroll Spinney (he's the guy behind Oscar & Big Bird) walked right by us and nodded hello. I don't think I've ever been more star-struck and stupefied in my life than in that moment!
After the ceremony, we all headed to Mel's Drive-In diner in our black-tie fancy clothes for pancakes and milkshakes. Now that's how you celebrate! No big statue, but it was a heck of a great trip. Thanks to all of you for your support. Now we just have to try again for next year!

Day 3: The Emmy Awards!
Posted on June 13, 2007
Wednesday:
Today was amazing! We saw an enormous Elvis impersonator standing right next to a scrawny guy who really shouldn't have been wearing a Superman costume. You gotta love Hollywood! After a fine breakfast at Mel's Diner, we saw Jackie Chan's star on the Walk of Fame and Clark Gable's hand prints in the cement. My favorite: R2-D2 and C-3PO's robot-prints immortalized in the sidewalk.
Our business meetings in the afternoon were great - they could lead to some very cool projects down the road. Don't worry - we're not leaving Maine to move to L.A. anytime soon. But we sure like visiting.
The day wrapped up with a trip to Santa Monica: a walk on the pier and dipping our feet in the Pacific. Or in Stephen & Kim's case, dipping their feet in the Pacific and getting slammed by a huge wave! Heh heh. Mike & I ran faster.
Tomorrow: the big Emmy ceremony. Yikes! Check out the live webcast tomorrow night and keep your fingers crossed!
|
Day 2: The Emmy Awards!
Posted on June 12, 2007
Tuesday:
Not a lot of excitement today - just a lot of time on airplanes. The guy behind us on the plane stole an extra snack from the galley. And then he spilled tomato juice all over himself. Can you say karma?
Mike & Kim are going with us, which is most excellent. They are the folks who run the Oddfellow Theater, our amazing artistic home base in Buckfield, Maine. Besides being a phenomenal performer, Mike was behind the camera for our first big video.
We're all staying at the Renaissance Hotel in Hollywood - with a great view of the Hollywood sign. How cool is this? We're right next door to the Kodak Theatre where they have the Oscar ceremonies and Graumann's Chinese Theater where all the famous people put their hands & feet in cement. Tomorrow: business meetings with big Hollywood-types and going to the beach!
|
Day 1: The Emmy Awards!
Posted on June 12, 2007
Monday:
The Emmys are on Thursday. Yikes! I've never worn a tuxedo in my life! So this evening, we went down to JC Penney. Near as I can tell, that's the only place within 50 miles where we can get tuxedos in time - remember, folks, we live in Buckfield, Maine!
The only pants they had for me were four inches too big in every direction. So as I type, our friend Nancy is frantically hemming, cutting, stitching, and moving buttons so that when we leave in the morning, I will actually have a tux. For the Emmys. How very surreal.
We won't be on TV - that's a different night - unless, like the technical Oscars, they show you a bit of the Broadband awards during the Daytime telecast. But check out the live web cast. It starts at 8pm Pacific / 11pm Eastern, this Thursday, the 14th. Click here for all the details!. Thanks for all your support - it's been a heck of a year. Wish us luck!

Webby Awards, Night #2
Posted on June 5, 2007
Tuesday, June 5:
Tonight, we did a live performance on Wall Street. And when I say, "on Wall Street," I really mean it: we were out on the sidewalk. It's 11pm, and we're dropping Mentos into Diet Coke as David Bowie and the Beastie Boys all make their way out of the grand ballroom. It was wild! The city didn't give us final permission to make such a big mess until literally a couple of days ago, and as it was, we had to scale things down and cram as many bottles as we could onto a tiny platform on the sidewalk.
We ended up setting off 80 bottles (check out the video on CNN). The surprise of the night: we're performing right next to the building, so all our angled geysers ricocheted off the wall. Right onto me! I had several moments of feeling like I was surrounded by firehoses of Diet Coke. I don't think I've ever gotten soaked so much, and we're used to getting soaked to the skin!
My favorite speech of the night was by Clearification: "Thanks, Mom. Whoever you are."
So, now: to sleep for a few hours. Home tomorrow - hurrah! Lots of thanks to David & Michael for making sure that the Diet Coke and trays all arrived for the performance. Thanks to Matt for all the help setting up. Thanks to the Webbys and all their crew for a great couple of days - thanks for the awards! And thanks to all of you for watching and voting!

At the Webby Awards...
Posted on June 4, 2007
Monday, June 4:
Tonight was the Webby Online Film & Video Awards - WOW! Who'd have thought, a year ago, that we'd be here, all dressed up, walking on a red carpet with actual paparazzi?! It's exactly a year and a day since we put our first video online. Now we're at over 18,000,000 views. Mind you, the organizers didn't recognize us at first, since we weren't wearing the lab coats and goggles. So they apologetically came and grabbed us from the reception & made us walk back down the red carpet. It was wild - just like on TV: the cameras were snapping, with photographers calling, "over here, over here!" It was so completely surreal!
Acceptance speeches at the Webbys are limited to five words, which makes for some great speeches - and a much quicker ceremony. For our acceptance speech, I got to go up and say: "18,000,000 views. Still no dates." =sigh=
Lots of people came up to me at the afterparty! :)
